Arunachaleswarar Temple

One of the most significant Shiva temples in India, dedicated to Lord Arunachaleswarar (Lord Shiva). This grand temple, with its towering gopurams and intricate architecture, is a sacred pilgrimage site for devotees. The temple is also associated with the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam, representing the element of fire (Agni).

Arunachala Hill (Annamalaiyar Malai)

The holy hill is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva himself. Devotees perform Girivalam (circumambulation of the hill), a 14-kilometer spiritual trek, especially on full moon days, seeking blessings and spiritual upliftment.

Located higher up on the Arunachala Hill, this ashram served as Sri Ramana Maharshi’s residence before he moved to Ramana Ashram. The trek to Skandashramam offers scenic views and spiritual tranquility.

 

Sathanur Dam

 

Situated about 30 km from Tiruvannamalai, this picturesque dam on the Pennaiyar River is a popular spot for picnics and day trips. It also has a well-maintained garden, boating facilities, and a crocodile farm.

 

Gingee Fort (Senji Fort)

 

Located about 35 km from Tiruvannamalai, this historic fort is known for its impressive architecture and strategic location atop three hillocks. Often called the “Troy of the East,” it is a great spot for history buffs and trekking enthusiasts.

 

Mamara Guhai (Tree Cave)

 

A natural cave under a large tree on Arunachala Hill, where Sri Ramana Maharshi meditated during his early years in Tiruvannamalai. It is a peaceful spot for meditation and reflection.

 

Adi Annamalai Temple

 

An ancient temple located on the western side of the Arunachala Hill. It is considered to be older than the Arunachaleswarar Temple and is an important stop on the Girivalam route.

 

Parvathamalai

 

Located about 35 km from Tiruvannamalai, Parvathamalai is a popular trekking destination and a spiritual hub. At the summit, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, surrounded by breathtaking views.
